5 New Year’s Resolutions for a more creative 2019

5 New Year’s Resolutions for a more creative 2019

How to have a more creative 2019

You don’t quite have to go the full ‘New Year, new me’ this New Year. We’ve got 5 (relatively simple) resolutions to give you a more creative 2019.

1. Start small – A doodle a day

Not everything you do needs to be the equivalent of painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Starting small (and often) is good. Creativity is like a muscle – the more you use it, the stronger it gets. You could do a doodle a day, re-organise your desk, or write 500 words in an essay or short story every day. See how that improves your creative thinking.

2. Don’t let perfection be the enemy of the good

Leslie Knope is right. You are a beautiful, talented, brilliant, powerful musk ox. What you just did is good enough – don’t be so hard on yourself. Better something done and imperfect, than something perfect and non-existent. Creativity is a process, not an end result.

3. Make the most of good ideas

Good ideas are good ideas – so make the most of them. Obviously don’t go plagiarising other people’s work, but don’t get hung up on a ‘truly original idea’. As David Hume wrote: “creative power amounts to no more than the faculty of compounding, transposing, augmenting, or diminishing the materials afforded us by the senses and experience”. So keep a scrapbook or a folder of screenshots and photos to draw inspiration from. Make your own version of an iconic painting, or write a commentary on a story or article.

4. Give yourself mental space

Everybody gets writers block (or equivalent) from time to time, and that’s ok. Starting with something small, like doodling, or the other ideas from above, can be a way around that. Why not set aside half an hour a day, or an evening a month, where you clear your diary to do something creative. And while time pressure can sometimes be helpful for creativity, it’s important to remember that there’s no rush.

5. Make an event out of it

Wow! Creative events? What a good idea! You could come to a PopUp Painting event, naturally, but that’s not the only way to make an event out of getting creative. Join in with seasonal things like The Big Draw, or writing competitions – or invite your Mum round for tea and get her to join in with you!
