PopUp Painting’s ‘artist of the week’ is Karin Mamma Andersson.
Mamma Andersson (as the artist is better known) is a contemporary painter from Sweden.
The artist studied at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm between 1986-1993.
Mamma Andersson has a distinctive style of painting that juxtaposes thickly layered paint with loosely washed areas of textured paint.
The artist often plays with a sense of space, depicting skewed perspectives and impossible circumstances coexisting. Andersson is inspired by filmic imagery, theater sets, period interiors, as well as folk art and Nordic figurative painting.
The artist’s varied interests and inspirations evoke a sense of the otherworldly, lending the work an almost dreamlike quality.
