PopUp Painting’s ‘artist of the week’ is artist and Manchester PopUp Painting team member James Ventre.
James Ventre graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2017 and since graduating has based himself and his practice in the city.
Ventre’s practice centres around creating large scale abstract paintings. The artist is interested in the notion of the ‘sublime’, in particular when it relates to landscape.
Venture was influenced by his travels to California, Nevada and the French alps. The artist describes immersing himself in these vast landscapes and wanting to recreate them on the canvas. The artist’s large scale paintings with their bleached out colours and glossy layers evoke a sense of the failings of memory. The viewer is given incomplete, often verging on abstract, images of trees, lampposts and other recognisable traces in the landscape, however these soon fade into in the vast painterly backgrounds.
