PopUp Painting’s ‘artist of the week’ is Nerine Tassie (also known as Nerine McIntyre).
Tassie graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2002 with a degree in Fine Art. Natural spaces and forms provide the basis and inspiration for her work, in particular the coastal waters and woodlands around her home. These landscapes are ever changing and thus provide an infinite subject matter for her work. Tassie’s paintings are primarily an exploration of nature and seek to create a strong sense of atmosphere and connection to place. Exploring materials and using a variety of painterly techniques Tassie creates a rich texture in the work.
More recently the artist has been exploring the relationship between composition and frame, experimenting with this balance within the picture plane to create depth of focus for the viewer. The artist herself notes:
“I enjoy the act of painting and the physicality of the paintwork on the canvas and so my process of working involves experimenting with base layers of varied materials in order to constantly develop new experiences within each painting”.
In 2015 Tassie participated in and won the Sky Arts ‘Landscape Artist of the Year’ prize.
